We chose a straw cup instead of a sippy cup for our collection because research shows that drinking from straws strengthens the oral motor skills needed for clear speech development. We didn't go with traditional sippy cups because prolonged use of them can negatively impact babies' oral development, potentially leading to speech delays and my contribute to tooth decay.

In fact many pediatric speech therapists recommend that infants and toddlers struggling with speech development drink from straws. Among other things, the muscles that are strengthened by straw drinking help little ones to produce early consonant sounds like “M”, “P”, and “B”.

True to our name SMPL (safe, minimalist, practical and lasting), our thoughtfully designed sturdy silicone cup with handles and a straw make learning to drink easier and minimize messes.  Learning to drink from a straw is easy with our cups because you can slightly squeeze them to release liquids and incentivize babies to suck-- a lot easier and less messy than the pipette method.

Remember, babies and toddlers should always be supervised by an adult when drinking and eating.

The SMPL Difference

  1. Two handles to promote baby's independence when drinking
  2. Soft silicone straw with stopper to prevent baby from pulling it out
  3. Tight seal lid to prevent spills (it may still leak from straw but not spill from being opened)
  4. Inside liquid measurements to help track how much baby is drinking
  5. 100% food grade silicone which is BPA free, phthalate free, lead free and odorless
  6. Stain resistant, dishwasher safe, microwave safe, freezer safe, boiling water sterilization safe and can withstand temperatures up to 220 degrees celsius

A Cup with Growing Charm!

Heads up! Our cup starts off a bit stiff—it’s all part of the design to keep little hands from turning mealtime into splash time.

Good news: it’ll get easier for you to open and close over time—but it’ll stay just challenging enough to keep curious little hands in check!

Tips:

  • To loosen up the cup sooner rather than later, boil all the parts of the cup separately for 10 minutes.
  • To open, give a firm squeeze just under the lid to loosen the seal, then twist the lid off with your other hand.
  • When closing (especially with liquids), don’t fill past the 4oz mark, twist the lid on slowly and gently, and resist the urge to squeeze the cup
  • Wash and sterilize baby eating utensils before use
  • ALL silicone products are prone to tasting like the dish detergent used to clean them. To avoid silicone products tasting like soap or chemicals, avoid using detergents that contain fragrances, moisturizers, essential oils, or antibacterial agents-- fragrance free detergents are safer options too!
  • If silicone products start to taste strange, boil in water for at least 5 mins or scrub with lemon or vinegar and hot water.
  • Do not use sharp objects such as knives on eating and drinking utensils.
